Louisiana’s French language does not exist in a vacuum, but instead has developed over time symbiotically with its sister tongue Louisiana Creole. After investigating the Bayou Teche and Pointe Coupée dialects of this cherished yet endangered tongue in previous episodes of La Veillée, the Télé-Louisiane team visited with speakers of Louisiana Creole from Vacherie in St. James Parish about what makes their dialect unique and how the language was crafted by enslaved people across generations.
Each episode is in Louisiana French with English subtitles, so everyone can watch.

Explore Louisiana’s endangered Creole language with the new digital series Kouri-Vini 101, produced in partnership by LPB and The Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL). Kouri-Vini 101 is an engaging and educational series, hosted by international artist, producer, and Creole culture activist Clif St. Laurent, that demystifies Kouri-Vini, the endangered Creole language of Louisiana.
Blending history, linguistics, and myth-busting with practical lessons, the series equips viewers with a foundational understanding of the language through community engagement and interviews with native and fluent speakers in real-world contexts. Keeping Kouri-Vini alive is important to not only those Creole communities, but to Louisiana as a whole. “Heritage language learning helps to reconnect individuals with their culture and preserves the unique traditions that make our state stand out,” says Marguerite Justus, Community Development Specialist with CODOFIL.
“Kouri-Vini 101 is the kind of project that is at the very heart of our mission and a part of our enduring relationship with CODOFIL,” says LPB President and CEO Clarence “C.C” Copeland. “It is educational in an entertaining way and captures the flavor of our state. Additionally, as a digital series, it puts this distinctive aspect of Louisiana culture before an audience that stretches well beyond our state - and that’s a great thing.”
