AN INSPIRING LOOK AT DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
CHANGE, NOT CHARITY: THE AMERICAN'S WITH DISABILITIES ACT

Tuesday 8:00pm

The emotional and dramatic story of the decades-long push for equality and accessibility that culminated in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990.

While curb cuts, ramps at building entrances, and braille on elevator buttons seem commonplace today, they were once the subject of a pitched battle that landed on the steps of Congress. Told through the voices of key participants and witnesses, the film highlights the determined people who literally put their bodies on the line to achieve their goal and change the lives of all Americans.

A story of courage and perseverance, the film brings to life one of the great civil rights movements in American history, where ordinary people made their voices heard and Congress responded. A testament to the power of coalition building and bipartisan compromise, the passage of the ADA is a shining example of democracy in action.

ONE OF THE GREATEST CELLIST OF ALL TIME

JACQUELINE DU PRE: GENIUS AND TRAGEDY
Friday 9pm

In swinging 1960s London, the Beatles were topping the pop charts, but Jacqueline du Pre was the poster child for a new golden generation of artists and friends, who injected a youthful excitement into a staid industry.

Those who know, consider Jacqueline du Pre one of the greatest cellists of all time - certainly in the top three - despite a career that was cruelly curtailed by multiple sclerosis at just twenty-eight years old. The force of nature took away her prodigious gift and her joy of performing and she endured fourteen years of unremitting illness. However, during her short time on the international concert platform - about a decade - she had the musical world at her feet, with an expressive style that cast a spell on anyone who saw her perform. Introduced and narrated by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, this film tells the story of who she was and why she was such an extraordinary musician. It is full of candid moments off stage and in rehearsal, together with powerful concert performances.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT: DANIEL TIGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD & LONG-TERM IMPACT

DANIEL TIGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Broadcast - Sunday - Friday at 8:00 AM on LPB
Web: Videos, Games, Sing-a-Longs

YouTube Playlist

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, inspired by the beloved puppet character from the pioneering television classic Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, debuted on PBS KIDS in 2012. From its inception, the producers collaborated with developmental psychologists and early learning experts to ensure the show taught preschoolers essential life skills such as empathy. The animated series built upon Fred Rogers' legacy of social and emotional education, using music, creativity, and imagination. This thoughtful approach proved successful, as Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has maintained its popularity, both with parents and children, for more than a decade.

To assess the long-term impact on the young audiences who watched Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood many years ago, Fred Rogers Productions asked UCLA's Center for Scholars & Storytellers (CSS) to independently conduct a mixed methods study, surveying 150 teenagers ages 13-16 who were toddlers when the show premiered. The study participants represented diverse gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds, with demographics matching U.S. census data proportions.

The study revealed that teenagers who watched Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood as young children retained significant memories of the show's lessons about social-emotional and life skills. Nearly three quarters of the participants remembered learning how to understand others' emotions, maintain friendships, manage their emotions, and develop problem-solving skills. Read more about this impactful research from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA.

Key Learning Goals: Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood

  • Helping children understand and manage their emotions
  • School readiness by helping children with essential skills like self-control
  • Relationship building by modeling respectful behavior toward others
